Cypress spider mite

Systematic position: The cypress spider mite (Platytetranychus libocedri) belongs to the family Tetranychidae within the order Trombidiformes. It is a highly specialized mite species that thrives on various coniferous hosts, often causing significant aesthetic and physiological damage to ornamental evergreen plants.

Host plants: This pest primarily targets members of the Cupressaceae family. Common hosts include Cupressus species, Juniperus (junipers), Thuja (arborvitae), and Libocedrus. In nurseries and urban landscapes, it is particularly problematic on hedges and specimen trees where microclimates favor rapid mite proliferation.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle progresses through the egg, larva, two nymphal stages, and adult stages. Depending on the climate, the mite can complete several generations per year. Overwintering occurs primarily as fertilized adult females hiding in bark crevices or at the base of needle clusters. Activity resumes in the spring, with populations peaking during hot, dry periods.

Damage and severity: Mites feed by piercing the plant cells and extracting nutrients, which interrupts photosynthesis. Initial symptoms include stippling and yellowing, progressing to bronzing or browning of the foliage. Heavy infestations result in dense webbing, premature needle drop, and in severe cases, branch dieback and overall plant decline, which significantly reduces the ornamental value.

Control measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Cultural practices such as maintaining adequate plant hydration and avoiding drought stress are critical, as stressed plants are more susceptible. Chemical control involves the application of specialized acaricides. To prevent the development of pesticide resistance, it is crucial to rotate products with different modes of action.
