Linden spider mite

Systematic position: The linden spider mite (Platytetranychus multidigituli) belongs to the order Acariformes and the family Tetranychidae. It is a microscopic arachnid that specializes in parasitizing specific tree species, commonly found in urban forestry and parks.

Host plants: This pest primarily affects linden trees (Tilia spp.), with a marked preference for the small-leaved linden (Tilia cordata). The mites establish colonies predominantly on the abaxial (lower) surface of the leaves, where they feed and reproduce.

Biology and life cycle: The mites overwinter as fertilized females hidden in the crevices of the bark or deep within the scales of twigs. Upon the onset of spring and the breaking of buds, they migrate to the developing foliage. Multiple overlapping generations occur during the growing season, with population peaks typically coinciding with hot, dry weather conditions.

Nature of damage: The mites pierce leaf cells and suck out the contents, leading to the formation of yellow chlorotic spots and overall leaf discoloration. Heavy infestations cause premature leaf senescence, defoliation, and a decline in the tree's physiological vigor. The presence of fine webbing on the leaf underside is a characteristic diagnostic feature of their activity.

Protection measures: Management strategies emphasize both cultural and chemical control methods. To mitigate the impact of the pest, consider the following:
