The genus Plebeius belongs to the family Lycaenidae within the order Lepidoptera. While these butterflies are often observed in natural meadows, some species can pose a threat to agricultural productivity when their populations reach high densities, particularly in fields containing leguminous plants and clovers.
The host plants mainly include various species of legumes, such as alfalfa and wild clover. The larvae (caterpillars) are the primary stage causing damage. They feed on leaves, buds, and flowers, which significantly stresses the plant during its most critical stages of growth and reduces the quality of the harvested biomass.
The biological cycle of Plebeius is characterized by a complex relationship with the environment. Many species in this genus exhibit myrmecophily, meaning the larvae have symbiotic relationships with ants.
