Unlike agricultural pests that consume crops directly, this insect is a specialized parasitoid that targets the larvae and pupae of various sawflies, which are major defoliators of coniferous trees.

This species is primarily associated with coniferous forests and nurseries, where its hosts, such as the European pine sawfly (Neodiprion sertifer), thrive. By focusing its reproductive efforts on the cocoons of these pests, Pleolophus brachypterus functions as a natural regulator that maintains ecological balance and prevents sawfly outbreaks.

The life cycle begins when the female wasp detects the scent or location of a sawfly cocoon hidden within the forest floor or leaf litter.
