Description

Plesispa is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Chrysomelidae, order Coleoptera. These insects are significant agricultural pests, particularly known for infesting palm trees. The most well-documented species, Plesispa reichei, causes economic losses in tropical fruit production by targeting young palm foliage.

The primary host plants for Plesispa include the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) and various ornamental palm species. The beetles prefer to inhabit the unopened spear leaves of the palm, where the tender tissue provides both food and protection from the environment and external predators.

The biology of these beetles is characterized by a lifecycle that takes place almost entirely within the palm crown. Females deposit eggs in clusters on the leaves. Both the larval and adult stages feed by scraping the surface of the leaf tissues, resulting in distinct longitudinal patterns of damage.

The level of damage caused by Plesispa can be severe. Feeding results in the desiccation of leaf tissues, leading to stunted growth and reduced photosynthetic capacity. In young palms, heavy infestations can lead to the death of the apical bud, effectively killing the plant or causing permanent deformation.

Effective management strategies require a combination of approaches:
