Plesispa reichei is a beetle species belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. It is widely recognized in tropical agriculture as a significant pest of palm trees, particularly the coconut palm. The beetle thrives in environments where host plants are abundant, often causing severe economic losses in commercial plantations.

The primary hosts for this pest include various palm species, with Cocos nucifera (coconut palm) being the most severely affected. The pest is particularly devastating to nursery seedlings and young plants, as it directly attacks the vulnerable, developing tissues of the terminal bud and newly emerging leaves.

Regarding its biology, the beetle completes its life cycle in a semi-concealed manner. Both the larvae and adults feed within the folded, unopened leaflets of the palm's central spear. This behavior protects the insect from natural predators and makes manual inspection difficult until the leaves have already sustained significant damage.

The damage caused by Plesispa reichei is characterized by linear streaks and withered patches on the foliage. As the leaves unfurl, they appear scorched, distorted, and chlorotic. If the infestation is not controlled, the continuous feeding on the apical meristem can stunt growth or lead to the total death of the palm tree.
