Podagrica
Podagrica
Description
Podagrica is a genus of beetles belonging to the Galerucinae subfamily within the leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae). These insects are commonly found in agricultural ecosystems and can cause significant damage to crops during periods of high population density.
The primary crops affected by Podagrica are members of the Malvaceae family. In agricultural settings, this pest most frequently impacts cotton crops, as well as various vegetable crops located within the insect's endemic range.
The biology of this pest is closely tied to seasonal cycles. Adult beetles overwinter in the upper soil layers or beneath plant debris. In the spring, they emerge, become active, and feed, after which the females deposit eggs in the soil or on the undersides of host plant leaves where larvae subsequently develop.
The damage caused by Podagrica involves creating holes in leaf blades, a process known as skeletonizing or perforation. The impact manifests as a reduction in the plant's photosynthetic surface area, stunted growth, and significant yield loss, particularly during the seedling stage.
To effectively protect crops from this pest, the following agrotechnical and chemical measures are recommended:
- Implementing crop rotation to disrupt the pest's life cycle.
- Controlling weeds from the Malvaceae family that serve as secondary hosts.
- Performing deep fall plowing to destroy overwintering sites.
- Applying authorized insecticides upon reaching the economic threshold of damage.
