Mallow flea beetle

The Mallow flea beetle (Podagrica fuscicornis) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This specialized pest primarily targets plants within the Malvaceae family, showing a clear preference for species such as mallows, althaea, and related ornamental or medicinal plants.

The host range is largely confined to the Malvaceae family, making this beetle a particular concern for growers of medicinal herbs and specialized floral crops. The beetle’s distribution is closely linked to the availability of its food sources, often appearing in higher densities in gardens and plantations where these specific plants are cultivated in monoculture.

The lifecycle typically involves overwintering as adults in the soil or under dense plant debris. As temperatures rise in spring, the adults emerge to feed on foliage and proceed with mating. Eggs are deposited in the soil or near the crown of the plants. The larvae, which are soil-dwelling, feed on the root systems, which can lead to subterranean damage that is often overlooked until the plant shows clear signs of wilting.

Adult feeding results in characteristic "shot-hole" damage, where numerous small holes appear on the leaves. Over time, these holes can expand and coalesce, leading to significant defoliation and a skeletonized leaf appearance. This reduces the photosynthetic efficiency of the plant, stunts its growth, and can result in total crop failure if the infestation is severe enough during the early seedling stage.
