Description

The mallow flea beetle (Podagrica fuscipes) is a beetle species belonging to the family Chrysomelidae within the order Coleoptera. This insect is a significant pest primarily targeting plants of the Malvaceae family. Like other flea beetles, it is characterized by thickened hind femora, which allow it to jump away quickly when disturbed, making it a challenging pest to manage in agricultural environments.

The host range of Podagrica fuscipes is concentrated on species within the Malvaceae family, including various cultivars of Alcea (hollyhock), Malva, and Hibiscus, as well as cotton (Gossypium). Both adult beetles and larvae contribute to the damage caused to the plants. Adults are responsible for the most visible destruction, while the subterranean activity of larvae can impact plant vigor from below.

Regarding its life cycle, Podagrica fuscipes typically overwinters in the adult stage within soil crevices or underneath leaf litter. As temperatures rise in the spring, the beetles emerge to begin feeding on young, succulent foliage. The female beetles deposit eggs in the soil near the host plants, and the emerging larvae develop while feeding on the roots or lower stems of the plants.

The damage caused by the mallow flea beetle is distinctive and easily recognizable. The feeding activity of the adults creates numerous small, round holes in the leaves, often referred to as a "shot-hole" pattern. Under severe infestation conditions, the entire leaf surface may become perforated, leading to reduced photosynthetic capacity, stunted growth, and in extreme cases, plant death, especially in seedlings.

Management strategies for this pest require an integrated approach (IPM). Key tactics include:

  • cultural practices such as crop rotation and weed management, especially targeting wild Malvaceae;
  • soil cultivation after the harvest to disturb overwintering sites;
  • the application of registered insecticides during periods of peak adult activity.
Regular scouting of the field is crucial to determine the timing of interventions and ensure the effective control of the population.
