Description

The Mallow flea beetle (Podagrica puncticollis) is a specialized agricultural pest belonging to the Coleoptera order and the Chrysomelidae family. These small beetles are known for their distinct feeding habits, which target specific plant species, often causing significant damage to commercial and ornamental plantings.

The beetle primarily feeds on plants within the Malvaceae family, including hibiscus, hollyhocks (mallow), and various related species. When infestation levels are high, the impact can extend to neighboring crops, reducing the overall photosynthetic capacity and aesthetic value of the affected vegetation.

The life cycle of Podagrica puncticollis follows a classic progression: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults typically overwinter in the soil or under debris, emerging in the spring to feed on fresh foliage. After mating, females deposit eggs near the base of host plants, where larvae develop and continue to damage the root or lower stem tissues before pupating.
