Copper ground beetle

The Copper ground beetle (Pogonus chalceus) belongs to the family Carabidae within the order Coleoptera. It is a halophilic species, typically found in saline soils, coastal marshes, and specific agricultural landscapes with high mineral concentrations. While many ground beetles are beneficial predators, this species can occasionally become a nuisance to agricultural production when population densities peak.

This beetle primarily affects the seedlings of cereal and technical crops during their initial development phase. Both adults and larvae can consume seeds or chew on the emerging radicals and hypocotyls. This feeding behavior often leads to reduced plant stands, significant thinning of crops, and subsequent yield losses, particularly in fields with high moisture content and specific soil salinity.

The biology of Pogonus chalceus is closely tied to soil humidity and salt levels. The beetles are primarily nocturnal, spending the daylight hours concealed in soil crevices or under plant debris. The life cycle follows the classic transformation process of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Overwintering typically occurs in the adult stage, allowing them to emerge and begin feeding as soon as spring temperatures rise.

The damage caused by this pest is often subtle, manifesting as missing seeds or stunted seedlings that are unable to survive due to early root damage. Growers may sometimes misidentify this damage as fungal decay. In years with cool, delayed springs, when seed germination is prolonged, the period of vulnerability for the crop increases, leading to higher damage potential.
