Golden paper wasp

The Golden paper wasp (Polistes aurifer) is a species of social wasp within the Vespidae family. While these insects provide some benefits by preying on other insect larvae, they are considered agricultural pests because their feeding habits and nesting behaviors cause significant economic losses in orchards and vineyards during the harvest season.

This species primarily damages high-value crops such as grapes, peaches, apricots, and various berries. Adult wasps feed on the sugary pulp of ripening fruits, creating holes that destroy the fruit's integrity. These wounds lead to severe crop loss and secondary infections caused by fungi or bacteria that thrive on the exposed, decaying fruit flesh.

The biological cycle begins in the spring when the queen establishes a nest. The wasps construct these nests by masticating plant fibers, which they source from the surfaces of various plants. This constant stripping of plant fibers can weaken young shoots, causing surface damage that interferes with the plant's vascular health and general vigor during the growing season.

The level of damage is most visible during the maturation phase of fruits. The wasps' aggressive territorial nature makes manual harvesting difficult, while the direct destruction of fruit tissue renders the produce unmarketable. Furthermore, the presence of damaged fruit creates an environment that attracts other pests, causing a cascading effect of spoilage throughout the plantation.

Effective management and protection strategies include:

• Implementing physical barriers, such as protective mesh bags for fruit clusters and bunches.
• Proactive nest monitoring and removal early in the season when colonies are small.
• Setting up baited traps around the orchard perimeter to divert wasps from the ripening crops.
• Strict sanitation protocols, including the immediate removal of fallen or overripe fruit from the orchard floor to reduce food sources.
