Peruvian paper wasp

The Peruvian paper wasp (Polistes peruvianus) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the Vespidae family. While these insects play a role in natural ecosystems, they are often considered agricultural pests when their population density increases near fruit orchards and vegetable fields, causing significant economic damage.

The species primarily targets fruits with high sugar content, including grapes, figs, and stone fruits. By piercing the skin of ripening fruits, they feed on the internal juices, which directly results in significant crop loss and reduces the marketability of the harvested produce due to the destruction of the fruit's integrity.

Regarding their biology, these wasps are social insects that build nests out of paper-like material made from chewed plant fibers. Their life cycle begins in early spring when queens establish colonies. The larvae require protein-rich food, which leads workers to prey on other insects, often disrupting local populations of beneficial pollinators like honeybees.

The primary harmful impact is the secondary damage caused by fruit decay. Once a wasp breaches the protective skin of a fruit, it creates an entry point for various microorganisms, including yeasts and fungi, which rapidly cause rot. This makes it difficult to manage the crop's shelf life and leads to increased post-harvest losses if not controlled.

To effectively manage the presence of the Peruvian paper wasp, the following control measures are recommended:

• Systematic monitoring and physical removal of nests early in the season.
• Deployment of specialized attractant traps to reduce the number of foraging worker wasps.
• Implementation of physical barriers like netting to cover high-value crops.
