Variable paper wasp

The Variable paper wasp (Polistes variabilis) is a member of the Vespidae family within the order Hymenoptera. While they are often considered beneficial as predators of caterpillars in some ecosystems, they are recognized as significant pests in orchards and vineyards where they transition their feeding habits toward cultivated crops.

These wasps primarily damage high-sugar crops, including grapes, peaches, apples, and various berries. Their feeding behavior involves tearing through the protective epidermis of the fruit to reach the succulent flesh. This leads to direct crop loss and significantly decreases the marketability of the produce.

The biological cycle follows a social structure where the colony is established by a queen in the spring. As the season progresses, the worker population increases significantly. By the time harvest approaches, the demand for energy-rich carbohydrates leads the wasps to congregate on ripening fruits, causing concentrated damage to the orchard or vineyard.

The economic impact of Polistes variabilis is twofold. Beyond the immediate destruction of fruit tissues, the wounds inflicted by the wasps serve as infection sites for various plant pathogens. Yeasts, bacteria, and rot-inducing fungi quickly colonize the exposed areas, often leading to rapid decay of the entire bunch or fruit cluster.
