Pollinia

Description

Systematic position. Pollinia (Pollinia) is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae (mealybugs). These tiny, sap-sucking insects are highly adapted to living on various grasses and are known for their ability to thrive in protected and open environments where their host plants are present.

Host crops and damage. This pest primarily targets grasses, including forage crops, cereals, and certain ornamental species. By inserting their stylets into the plant tissue, they extract vital phloem sap. This feeding behavior causes plant vigor decline, leaf yellowing (chlorosis), stunting, and in severe cases, the death of individual plants or patches within a field.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Pollinia includes egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females often produce waxy, powdery coverings that provide protection against environmental stress and chemical treatments. Reproduction is frequently parthenogenic, allowing for rapid population growth during favorable warm conditions, enabling multiple overlapping generations per season.

Economic impact. The indirect damage caused by Pollinia is as significant as the direct feeding. As they excrete honeydew, they create a substrate for sooty mold growth, which inhibits photosynthesis by covering leaf surfaces. This buildup leads to reduced yield quality and vigor, making plants more susceptible to secondary pathogens and abiotic stress factors.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is crucial for controlling Pollinia.

  • Regular field scouting to detect early infestations.
  • Removal and destruction of infested host plants and surrounding weeds.
  • Encouraging natural predators such as ladybeetles and parasitic wasps.
  • Application of systemic insecticides when populations exceed economic thresholds to ensure deep tissue penetration and effective control.
