Willow gall sawfly

Pontania femoralis is a species of sawfly belonging to the family Tenthredinidae within the order Hymenoptera. This insect is a specialized parasite that targets willow trees, inducing the formation of characteristic galls on the leaves as a direct response to its larval development.

The primary hosts for this pest include various species of willow (Salix). It is frequently encountered in forest nurseries, ornamental gardens, and riparian zones where willows are maintained. Its presence is most noticeable on young saplings and specific decorative willow cultivars that are sensitive to leaf tissue damage.

The life cycle of this sawfly is strictly synchronized with the willow's seasonal growth. Adults emerge in the spring, and females deposit eggs into the leaf tissues. The resulting larva induces the plant to grow a gall around it, which provides a nutrient-rich and protected environment. Development usually involves one or two generations per year, with pupation occurring in the soil.

The damage is primarily characterized by the development of leaf galls, which can vary in shape and color. While individual galls may not kill a tree, heavy infestations lead to significant defoliation, reduced photosynthesis, and stunted annual growth. This stress makes the host tree more susceptible to secondary pest attacks and environmental pathogens.

Management strategies focus on a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. In small or high-value landscapes, manual removal and destruction of infested leaves before larval emergence are recommended. In larger areas, the following professional measures are typically implemented:
