Description
The porcelain mite (Porcellana) is a destructive arthropod belonging to the Tetranychidae family. Known for its small size and cryptic behavior, it primarily targets the leaf surfaces of various horticultural and ornamental crops, often going unnoticed until significant damage has occurred.
Systematically classified within the Acariformes order, this mite exploits the plant's vascular system. By puncturing epidermal cells and extracting chlorophyll-rich sap, the mite significantly inhibits the plant's ability to conduct photosynthesis, leading to reduced vigor and stunted growth.
The biology of the porcelain mite is highly temperature-dependent. Warm, dry microclimates serve as catalysts for rapid reproduction, allowing the population to explode within a single growing season if environmental conditions remain favorable and humidity levels are low.
