Description
The Porcellana platycheles, commonly referred to as the hairy porcelain crab, belongs to the order Decapoda and the family Porcellanidae. While generally considered a non-pest in traditional agriculture, it acts as a competitor in shellfish farming and controlled marine environments.
The biology of this species is adapted to intertidal zones, where they feed by filtering organic matter from the water using specialized appendages. Their lifecycle includes a pelagic larval stage, which allows them to colonize new areas, including artificial aquaculture substrates, very effectively.
The harmful impact of the crab is primarily competitive. By occupying space on oyster or mussel racks, they limit the settlement area for commercially viable mollusks and compete for suspended organic particles, thereby slowing down the growth rate of the target species.
The nature of damage is indirect, manifesting as reduced yield and stunted growth in farmed shellfish. Their ability to aggregate in high numbers allows them to monopolize resources, which can be problematic for high-density aquaculture operations.
