Taxonomic position: The woodlouse of the genus Porcellio belongs to the order Isopoda and the family Porcellionidae. Although they are crustaceans, these organisms are terrestrial and have adapted to moist environments, frequently becoming problematic pests in greenhouses and damp garden areas.

Biology and life cycle: Woodlice are nocturnal creatures that thrive in high-humidity habitats with decaying organic matter. They breathe through specialized gills, which dictates their need for constant moisture. Reproduction is continuous under favorable conditions, with females carrying their young in a brood pouch until they hatch as miniature versions of the adults.

Affected crops: They pose the greatest threat to greenhouse crops, seedlings, and small fruits. Common targets include cucumbers, tomatoes, leafy greens, and strawberries. If seedlings are planted in damp soil, woodlice can cause total devastation by feeding on tender stems and emerging roots.

Damage patterns and economic impact: Woodlice create irregular holes in leaves, stems, and fruits, often damaging parts of the plant near the soil surface. Their presence is usually indicated by shredded leaf tissue and weakened plant growth. In large populations, they can significantly reduce crop yield and destroy the commercial value of produce by leaving unsightly scars.

  • Maintain proper sanitation by removing decaying leaves, wooden boards, and debris.
