Porcellio laevis, commonly known as the smooth woodlouse, belongs to the order Isopoda, family Porcellionidae. Unlike most crustaceans, this species has successfully adapted to a terrestrial lifestyle, although it remains highly dependent on moisture, which leads it to thrive in greenhouse environments and damp garden beds.

The pest poses a significant threat to various plant species, particularly seedlings, sprouts of cucumbers, tomatoes, and ornamental plants. Due to their tendency to aggregate in moist conditions, they can cause localized but severe damage to young plants that are particularly vulnerable during the initial growth stages.

The biology of this species is characterized by a nocturnal behavior and a life cycle that involves the female carrying eggs in a brood pouch. The young, or mancae, emerge as miniature versions of adults and undergo several molts before reaching maturity. Their development is accelerated in environments rich in decaying organic matter.

Damage symptoms typically include irregular holes in leaves, stems, and roots. In high population densities, smooth woodlice can consume delicate seedlings entirely, leading to total crop loss. The feeding activity often goes unnoticed until significant damage is already done, as they remain hidden during the day.

Management and control strategies include:

  • Maintaining good drainage and reducing soil moisture to create unfavorable conditions.
  • Clearing debris, old wooden boards, and decaying plant matter from the cultivation area.
  • Setting up manual traps using moist corrugated cardboard to aggregate and remove individuals.
  • Application of specialized bait stations or registered insecticidal treatments to control populations.
