Natal multimammate mouse

The Natal multimammate mouse (Praomys natalensis, formerly Mastomys natalensis) belongs to the order Rodentia and the family Muridae. It is widely recognized as the most destructive agricultural rodent pest in sub-Saharan Africa. This species is highly adaptable, inhabiting both wild environments and human settlements, which complicates pest management efforts.

The pest causes extensive damage to various crops, with a clear preference for cereals such as maize, sorghum, millet, and rice. It also affects legumes, oilseeds, and vegetables. Damage occurs throughout the growth cycle, from the destruction of newly sown seeds and young seedlings to the consumption of maturing crops in fields and stored grains in granaries.

The biological cycle of this rodent is characterized by exceptional reproductive success. Females exhibit rapid maturation, and the gestation period is relatively short, allowing for the production of multiple large litters in a single year. These rodents are primarily nocturnal, living in burrows and showing high mobility, which enables them to invade agricultural land in large numbers when conditions are favorable.

The damage is severe, often resulting in total crop loss in localized areas. Besides direct consumption, these rodents contaminate food supplies with urine and feces, posing significant health risks. Praomys natalensis is also a known reservoir for various zoonotic diseases, including Lassa fever and plague, making its control vital not only for agricultural stability but also for public health safety.

To mitigate damage, an integrated pest management strategy is essential. This includes sanitation practices to remove shelter areas for rodents, the use of physical barriers like wire meshes around smaller plots, and the timely harvesting of crops. Chemical control through the use of rodenticides should be performed carefully, ensuring baits are placed in locations inaccessible to non-target species to maintain environmental safety.
