Description
Systematic position. Prays endocarpa belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Yponomeutidae. It is a highly specialized pest known primarily for its destructive impact on the fruit of various citrus species, posing a significant challenge to commercial citrus production in infested regions.
Host plants. The primary hosts for this species are citrus trees, with a marked preference for developing fruits. Species such as pomelo, grapefruit, and lemon are frequently attacked. Unlike leaf-mining moths, this specific pest focuses its nutritional intake on the fruit rind, causing direct economic damage.
Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle comprises the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Adult females lay eggs on the surface of young fruits. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the flavedo and albedo layers. This internal feeding behavior protects the larvae from many external environmental factors and complicates chemical control efforts.
