Olive moth

The olive moth (Prays endolemma) is a specialized insect species belonging to the Yponomeutidae family. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, specifically impacting olive production across various regions where Olea europaea is cultivated. Understanding its lifecycle is essential for effective orchard management.

The insect primarily affects olive trees, targeting different plant organs throughout the growing season. The pest exhibits a complex relationship with the host plant, where its life stages are synchronized with the tree's phenology. It causes damage by feeding on leaves, flowers, and developing fruits at different points in its reproductive cycle.

The life cycle involves multiple annual generations. The first generation typically develops within the leaf tissue, creating mines that weaken the tree's photosynthetic capability. Subsequent generations feed on flowers or penetrate the fruit, boring into the pulp and potentially destroying the seed, which directly affects the fruit's maturation and commercial value.
