Description

Taxonomic position: The olive moth (Prays oleae) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Yponomeutidae. It is recognized as one of the most significant pests affecting olive groves globally, particularly throughout the Mediterranean region where olive cultivation is intensive.

Host plants: This pest is monophagous, feeding exclusively on the olive tree (Olea europaea). Its survival is entirely dependent on the availability of specific plant tissues throughout the year, which has led to a highly specialized life cycle that tracks the plant's phenology.

Biology and life cycle: The olive moth completes three generations annually. The phyllophagous generation feeds on leaves; the anthophagous generation attacks the flower clusters; and the carpophagous generation develops inside the fruit. Larvae of the first generation overwinter within the leaf tissue, emerging in early spring.

Nature of damage: The damage caused by the larvae is severe. During the flowering stage, they web the blossoms together and consume the buds. During the summer, the carpophagous generation causes the most destruction by boring into the fruit, which often results in the fruit dropping prematurely from the tree.

Control measures: Effective management relies on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies to minimize yield loss:

  • Implementation of pheromone traps to monitor adult flight patterns and time interventions.
  • Applying biological pesticides, specifically those containing Bacillus thuringiensis, during high-risk windows.
  • Chemical treatments timed to target larvae before they bore into the fruit.
  • Good agricultural practices, including canopy management to reduce favorable conditions for pest development.
