Raspberry sawfly

The raspberry sawfly (Priophorus rubivorus) is a member of the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae. This insect is a significant pest of berry-producing plants, capable of causing substantial damage to foliage, which directly impacts the plant's overall health and the final yield of the fruit.

The primary host for this pest is raspberry, though it may also infest blackberry bushes. Due to its specific feeding habits, the larvae can rapidly colonize a patch, leading to severe leaf damage if left unchecked, particularly during the active growing season when the plant requires maximum photosynthesis.

The life cycle of the sawfly involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The insect typically overwinters in the soil as a larva inside a protective cocoon. Once conditions become suitable in the spring, the larvae pupate and emerge as adults, beginning the cycle of laying eggs on the underside of host leaves.

The damage caused by the larvae is characterized by skeletonization of the leaves, where the soft tissues are consumed, leaving only the primary veins behind. Heavy infestation results in significant foliage loss, which weakens the plant's vigor, reduces its energy reserves, and makes it more susceptible to secondary diseases and environmental stress.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices, such as tilling the soil around the base of the bushes to expose and destroy overwintering cocoons, are highly recommended. During the growing season, if the pest threshold is exceeded, application of systemic or contact insecticides may be necessary, provided they are applied early to protect pollinators.
