Pristiphora sawfly

The genus Pristiphora belongs to the family Tenthredinidae within the order Hymenoptera. These insects are widely recognized as significant pests in forestry and horticulture. Many species within this genus are highly host-specific, targeting various berry bushes, particularly gooseberries and currants, as well as several coniferous tree species.

The life cycle of the Pristiphora sawfly typically consists of four stages: egg, larva (often called a false caterpillar), pupa, and adult. Females use their saw-like ovipositors to insert eggs into leaf tissues or shoots. Upon hatching, the larvae begin to feed voraciously, often undergoing several molts before moving into the soil to pupate within a silk-like cocoon.

Damage caused by these larvae is characterized by leaf skeletonization or complete defoliation. In severe infestations, Pristiphora can strip an entire bush of its foliage within a few days. This massive loss of photosynthetic area severely weakens the plant, limits carbohydrate storage, and can lead to plant death if the defoliation is repeated over several seasons.

The economic impact of this pest is significant, as it directly affects yield quantity and quality. Furthermore, the presence of larvae and their excrement significantly lowers the marketability of the produce. Monitoring for early signs of leaf damage is essential for successful management and to prevent the build-up of population density during the growing season.
