Systematic position of this pest places it within the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae. As a specialized defoliator, the Large larch sawfly is a well-known organism that impacts larch forests across the Northern Hemisphere, causing significant economic losses in the forestry sector.
Crops damaged by this insect are exclusively species of the genus Larix. The sawfly shows a strong preference for older trees, although younger saplings can also suffer severe damage. When population density reaches an outbreak level, the insect is capable of defoliating entire forest stands over vast territories.
Biology and lifecycle revolve around a single generation per year in most regions. The winter is spent as a mature larva inside a cocoon within the forest litter. Adult sawflies emerge in the spring, and females deposit eggs into incisions made in the needles of the host trees. The larvae emerge and undergo several molting stages before descending to the soil to hibernate.
Character of damage and harmfulness is primarily observed as the stripping of needles from the branches. The larvae feed gregariously, moving from branch to branch. Continuous defoliation over several consecutive years significantly weakens the tree, leading to crown dieback, reduced wood increment, and in many cases, tree mortality due to secondary infestation by bark beetles.
Protection measures involve a combination of silvicultural and chemical strategies. Forest managers rely on regular monitoring of egg-laying sites and larval counts. If control is necessary, localized application of systemic insecticides or biological preparations like Bacillus thuringiensis is recommended. Encouraging the presence of natural predators, including small mammals and parasitic wasps, plays a vital role in natural regulation.
