Description
The yellow gooseberry sawfly (lat. Pristiphora grossulariae) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae. This insect is a major threat to small fruit plantations, as it specifically targets members of the genus Ribes, causing significant economic damage.
The primary host plants for this species are gooseberries and currants. Due to the high feeding rate of the larvae, a single colony can defoliate a bush in a matter of days if left uncontrolled during the early stages of infestation.
The life cycle of Pristiphora grossulariae involves overwintering as prepupae in cocoons within the soil under the host plants. Adults emerge in spring, coinciding with the bud-burst stage of gooseberries. Females deposit eggs into the leaf tissues, and the larvae emerge to feed gregariously. Depending on the climate, the pest can complete several generations throughout the growing season.
Damage symptoms begin as small holes in the leaves created by young larvae. As the larvae develop, they consume the entire leaf lamina, eventually leaving only the veins intact. This severe defoliation weakens the plant, hinders berry development, and significantly reduces the yield for the following year if the infestation is not checked.
