Subarctic sawfly

Pristiphora subarctica

Description

The Pristiphora subarctica is a species of sawfly belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae. It is recognized as an important forest pest, primarily associated with coniferous trees in boreal and subarctic regions, where it can cause localized ecological damage.

The primary hosts for the larvae of this species are spruce trees (Picea). The insects are foliage feeders; their presence is often overlooked until significant needle loss occurs. High populations of this pest can lead to severe defoliation, which negatively impacts the tree's health, wood quality, and overall growth rate.

The life cycle consists of an egg stage, larval stage (where they appear as caterpillar-like sawfly larvae), pupal stage, and the adult phase. Pupation typically occurs in the soil or forest litter, allowing the larvae to overwinter safely. Adults emerge in the spring to begin the cycle anew, laying eggs directly into the needles of host trees.

Damage caused by Pristiphora subarctica includes the consumption of needles, often starting from the tips. Younger needles are frequently preferred. Repeated annual defoliation weakens the tree's physiological status, making it more susceptible to secondary infestations by bark beetles, borers, and various fungal diseases that thrive in stressed trees.

Management and control strategies emphasize an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. This involves:

  • Regular forest health monitoring during the larval development period.
  • Preservation of local natural predators and parasitoids.
  • Application of biological insecticides like Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) when necessary.
  • Silvicultural practices that maintain forest vigor and diversity, reducing the attractiveness of stands to the sawfly.

Chemical control should be considered only as a last resort, specifically when monitoring data indicates that the population density exceeds the economic threshold, threatening significant stand mortality.
