Systematic position: The birch leaf miner (Profenusa thomsoni) belongs to the order Hymenoptera, specifically the family Tenthredinidae. This insect is recognized as a significant defoliator and leaf-miner of birch species throughout the Northern Hemisphere, often causing localized outbreaks in woodland and urban environments.
Affected crops: The pest primarily targets trees within the genus Betula (birch). It is known to infest various species, including the European white birch and other native or introduced decorative birch trees planted in gardens, parks, and large-scale silviculture projects.
Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of Profenusa thomsoni is univoltine, meaning there is one generation per year. Adults emerge in late spring to early summer. Eggs are inserted into the upper leaf surface of young birch leaves. Larvae develop within the leaf tissue, feeding between the epidermal layers. By late summer, mature larvae drop to the ground, construct cocoons in the soil, and overwinter as pupae.
Damage and economic impact: The larval feeding creates characteristic blotch-like mines on the leaves. When infestations are heavy, the accumulated damage results in premature leaf drop, stunted growth, and canopy thinning. While mature trees can usually withstand defoliation, repeated annual attacks weaken the tree's health and make it susceptible to secondary environmental stresses or pathogens.
