Proisotoma

Proisotoma is a genus of springtails (Collembola) belonging to the family Isotomidae. These minute, wingless arthropods are primarily soil inhabitants. While they are often considered decomposers, certain species under the genus Proisotoma can become significant pests in greenhouse environments and nurseries, where they feed on live plant tissues, particularly in moist, organic-rich substrates.

The host range of Proisotoma primarily includes seedling stages of various vegetables and ornamental plants, as well as mushroom crops. They are particularly attracted to environments with high humidity and decaying organic matter, where they find refuge and food. The delicate roots of young seedlings are the most vulnerable targets during early growth stages.

The biology of Proisotoma is closely linked to soil moisture levels. They undergo a simple metamorphosis, with nymphs appearing as smaller versions of the adults. Given their rapid reproductive rate and short generation time, their population can explode quickly if the soil environment remains consistently wet and nutrient-dense, leading to severe localized infestations.

Damage caused by Proisotoma includes the consumption of root hairs and epidermal cells. This physical damage weakens the plant's ability to take up water and nutrients, resulting in stunted growth and chlorosis. Furthermore, the feeding wounds create entry points for soil-borne pathogens, often leading to secondary infections such as damping-off or root rot.
