Four-spotted sap beetle

Systematic position and description. Prometopia quadrimaculata belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Nitidulidae, commonly known as sap beetles. These insects are distinguished by their flattened body shape and four distinct spots on their elytra. Their morphology is highly adapted for survival in tight crevices, such as beneath bark or within damaged, fermenting plant tissue.

Host plants. This pest primarily targets fruit trees, including apples, pears, and various stone fruits. It is widely considered a secondary pest because it is attracted to damaged or decaying plant material. It often colonizes trees that have already suffered from mechanical injury, frost cracks, or the feeding activity of primary pests, taking advantage of the exudates present.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle of the four-spotted sap beetle is closely linked to decomposing organic matter. Adults overwinter in protected sites such as leaf litter or deep bark crevices. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed and locate suitable sites for oviposition. Larvae develop within damaged fruit or sap-oozing wounds, where they feed intensively until pupation occurs.

Damage and economic impact. The feeding activity of these beetles significantly exacerbates existing tree issues. By colonizing wounds, they act as vectors for fungal spores and bacterial pathogens, which accelerate tissue decay. In orchards with heavy infestations, fruit quality drops rapidly, making it unsellable and prone to rapid rot during storage or transportation.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Sanitation is the most critical factor, which involves removing fallen or rotting fruit from the orchard floor to eliminate breeding sites. Additionally, bark maintenance and the prompt treatment of pruning wounds are vital to prevent sap accumulation. Chemical control via targeted insecticides may be used during periods of high beetle activity.
