Description
Systematic position: The larger grain borer (Prostephanus truncatus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Bostrichidae. It is recognized as one of the most destructive pests of stored agricultural products, capable of causing devastating losses in both domestic and commercial storage facilities.
Crops damaged: The primary host of this pest is maize (corn), both shelled and on the cob. However, it is a polyphagous insect that also attacks sorghum, wheat, rice, cassava chips, and even timber, which often leads to the destruction of wooden storage containers and structures.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle includes egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females bore into the grain to deposit eggs.
