Psalis

Psalis is a genus of moths belonging to the family Erebidae (subfamily Lymantriinae). The most notable species within this genus is Psalis pennatula. As members of the order Lepidoptera, these insects are recognized as significant pests in various agricultural regions, where their larvae can cause widespread defoliation in cereal crops.

The host plants for Psalis species are primarily members of the Poaceae family. They demonstrate a high preference for crops such as rice, millet, maize, and sorghum. Additionally, they often utilize various wild grasses as alternative food sources, which facilitates their survival and rapid colonization of adjacent commercial agricultural lands.

The biology of Psalis follows a typical holometabolous lifecycle, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Depending on environmental conditions, the insect may undergo several generations per year.
