The Hairy caterpillar moth (Psalis pennatula) is a member of the Erebidae family. Historically known as a tussock moth, this insect is recognized as a significant pest in rice-growing regions. It represents a constant challenge for farmers due to its ability to proliferate rapidly under favorable tropical and subtropical conditions.

The biological development of this species includes four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult moths exhibit sexual dimorphism, with females being typically larger and less mobile than males. After mating, females lay eggs in batches on the host plant, often protected by specialized scales. Larvae are the primary mobile stage capable of covering significant areas within a field.

The damage caused by Psalis pennatula is characterized by defoliation. Larvae feed voraciously on the leaves of rice and other Poaceae species. In cases of severe infestations, the larvae can consume the entire leaf lamina, leaving only the midribs. This severe damage results in reduced grain yield, weakened stalks, and can even lead to total crop failure if left unchecked.

Agro-ecological factors play a crucial role in the lifecycle of this pest. High humidity and temperature facilitate faster generation turnover, sometimes resulting in overlapping generations. Farmers must monitor fields for the presence of early-instar larvae, as young larvae are more susceptible to biological control measures and topical treatments.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach to handle Psalis pennatula. This includes cultural practices such as clean cultivation to remove alternate weed hosts, encouraging natural predators like parasitic wasps, and the judicious use of biological insecticides (e.g., Bacillus thuringiensis). Chemical control with targeted insecticides remains an option when pest density reaches economic thresholds.
