Pseudosciara pedunculata

Pseudosciara pedunculata is a species within the family Sciaridae, belonging to the order Diptera. Often referred to as fungus gnats, these insects are significant pests in greenhouses, nurseries, and indoor environments. Their presence is often identified by the emergence of small black flies hovering above the soil surface.

This pest affects a wide range of plants, particularly focusing on seedlings, ornamental crops, and young vegetable plants. Crops grown in high-humidity conditions with rich, organic-based potting media are most susceptible to infestation, as these environments provide ideal breeding grounds for the species.

The life cycle of the pest consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. While adult gnats are generally harmless to plant tissue, they play a critical role in the reproduction cycle by laying eggs in damp soil. The larvae, which are the primary destructive stage, possess a distinct black head capsule and develop within the soil, feeding on organic matter, fungal mycelium, and plant roots.

Damage caused by the larvae includes significant root system degradation. By feeding on the root hairs and main roots, they stunt the growth of the plant, cause yellowing of the foliage, and, in severe cases, lead to the collapse and death of the plant. Furthermore, damaged roots become highly susceptible to soil-borne pathogens and root rot diseases.

Effective control measures include both cultural and chemical approaches. Maintaining proper soil drainage and avoiding overwatering are the first steps in preventing infestation. For monitoring, yellow sticky traps can be placed near the plants to capture adults. Chemical control may involve the application of soil-drench insecticides or biological controls such as Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis or parasitic nematodes.
