Psoa

Psoa (lat. Psoa) is a genus of beetles belonging to the Bostrichidae family, commonly known as auger beetles or false powderpost beetles. These insects are significant wood-boring pests that pose a serious threat to various woody plants. By targeting the inner layers of tree stems and branches, they contribute to the structural degradation of trees in both forest and agricultural environments.

These pests primarily infest a range of woody crops, with a particular affinity for fruit trees and grapevines. They are often found in deciduous species such as fig trees. Psoa typically seeks out stressed or weakened plants, making orchards with poor vitality or those affected by drought particularly susceptible to infestation.

The biology of Psoa involves a life cycle where the adult female lays eggs directly into the bark or crevices of the host plant. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the wood, creating intricate tunnels. These galleries are often packed with frass (wood powder), which can impede the plant’s nutrient transport system. The duration of the life cycle depends heavily on temperature and wood moisture content.

The damage caused by Psoa is characterized by multiple tiny exit holes on the tree's surface. As larvae consume the internal woody tissues, the branch or trunk structural integrity is compromised. This leads to symptoms such as leaf chlorosis, twig dieback, and in severe cases, the death of the tree. The weakening of the wood also makes trees more vulnerable to secondary fungal infections.

Management of Psoa infestations requires proactive horticultural practices and pest control. Essential strategies include:

• Regular monitoring of orchards for signs of boring activity.
• Pruning and destroying infested branches by burning to kill larvae and adults.
• Maintaining tree health through proper fertilization and irrigation to improve natural resistance.
• Strategic application of insecticides during the adult flight period to prevent new egg-laying cycles.
