Psoricoptera is a genus of moths belonging to the family Gelechiidae. These insects are recognized as specialized phytophagous pests that can cause significant damage to the foliage of various deciduous trees and shrub species within agricultural and woodland ecosystems.

The primary host plants for these insects include species of Quercus (oak), as well as various fruit trees like Malus (apple) and Pyrus (pear). By feeding on the leaves, the larvae impair the photosynthetic capacity of the plants, which can result in reduced tree vigor, premature leaf drop, and decreased fruit production if the infestation is severe.

The biological development of this pest typically involves a single generation per year. Adult moths overwinter in sheltered locations, such as under tree bark or within leaf litter. After the spring emergence, females lay eggs on developing buds or young leaves. Larvae create silk-lined leaf rolls or clusters, providing a secure environment for feeding and protection from environmental stress and natural predators.

Visible symptoms of Psoricoptera damage include rolled, distorted leaves and skeletonized leaf surfaces. Larvae feed on the parenchyma layer, often leaving only the veins intact. In commercial orchards, heavy larval density can lead to severe defoliation, which stresses the trees and negatively affects overall fruit quality and yield, necessitating timely intervention.

Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies to mitigate Psoricoptera impact include:

• Orchard sanitation: Removing and destroying leaf litter and pruning infested branches to reduce overwintering sites.
• Biological control: Applying microbial insecticides (such as Bacillus thuringiensis) during the early larval stages.
• Chemical control: Utilizing targeted insecticides during the larval emergence period if population thresholds are exceeded.
• Monitoring: Using pheromone traps or visual inspections to detect early signs of activity and optimize the timing of protective treatments.
