Sheep itch mite

Psorobia ovis is a microscopic skin mite belonging to the Psorergatidae family (order Acariformes). This parasite specifically infests sheep, causing a condition known as psorergatic mange. Despite its small size, this pest poses a significant economic threat to sheep farming due to the degradation of wool quality and the overall decline in animal health.

The life cycle of the mite occurs entirely on the host's body and spans approximately 5 to 6 weeks. Females deposit eggs within the superficial layers of the skin, where larvae hatch and develop through protonymph and deutonymph stages into adults. Mites typically inhabit areas with dense wool, which provides the necessary microclimate for their survival and reproductive activities.

The primary damage caused by Psorobia ovis is driven by mechanical irritation of the skin and the mites feeding on tissue fluids. This activity triggers intense itching, causing sheep to rub against fences or bite at their fleece, resulting in ragged, matted, and felted wool. The wool fibers become brittle and lose their elasticity, while the skin surface often shows dry scabs and scurf.

The impact of this pest is seen in the loss of commercial value of the wool due to matting and damage to the hair follicles. Furthermore, chronic irritation and restlessness impair the animal's feeding habits, leading to stunted growth in lambs and reduced immunity, making the flock more susceptible to opportunistic secondary skin infections.

Protection strategies rely on strict quarantine protocols for incoming animals and routine prophylactic treatments. Recommended control methods include:

• Dipping or showering sheep with appropriate acaricidal solutions.
• Administration of injectable anti-parasitic drugs, such as macrocyclic lactones.
