Psorosticha zizyphi
Description
Systematic position. Psorosticha zizyphi is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Depressariidae. It is widely recognized as a serious pest in citrus-growing regions, causing significant economic losses by damaging the foliage of valuable fruit crops.
Host plants. The primary hosts include various species of the genus Citrus, such as lemons, limes, oranges, and mandarins. Additionally, the pest has been reported on Ziziphus species, which serve as alternative reservoirs for population development during the off-season.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The moths are typically nocturnal. Larvae spin fine silk threads to fold or roll the leaves, creating a protective enclosure where they live and feed. This behavior makes them difficult to target with contact insecticides.
Nature of damage and economic importance. Feeding by the larvae leads to leaf deformation, skeletonization, and tissue necrosis. In cases of severe infestation, the loss of photosynthetic area stunts tree growth, results in fruit drop, and negatively impacts the overall physiological health of the citrus orchard.
Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential. This includes pruning heavily infested shoots, encouraging natural predators, and applying systemic insecticides when larvae are in their early instars. Careful timing is critical to ensure that chemical treatments reach the larvae before they are protected within the tightly rolled leaves.
