Description
The common bagworm moth, scientifically known as Psyche casta, belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Psychidae. It is a unique pest because, during the larval stage, it constructs a protective case (bag) made of bark, twigs, leaves, or soil particles, bound together with silk, which makes it very difficult to spot among garden debris.
This pest is a polyphage and can infest a wide range of cultivated plants. Its diet includes various tree and shrub species, including fruit trees, as well as many herbaceous plants commonly found in residential gardens, nurseries, and forested areas.
The biology of this species is characterized by significant sexual dimorphism. Males are fully developed winged moths, whereas females are wingless and often legless, remaining inside their silken cases until they lay their eggs. The larval development process is lengthy, with the caterpillar carrying its protective case throughout its entire life, expanding it as it grows.
The damage caused by Psyche casta involves the consumption of leaf tissue, which, during mass outbreaks, leads to significant defoliation of plants. Infested plants become weakened, lose their aesthetic value, and in the case of fruit-bearing plants, experience a decline in yield due to disrupted photosynthesis and overall plant stress.
Control measures combine cultural practices and chemical interventions. Key recommendations include:
- Manual collection and destruction of the cases during autumn and early spring when they are clearly visible.
- Application of biological insecticides (based on Bacillus thuringiensis) during the period of active feeding by younger instar larvae.
- Usage of contact-stomach insecticides in cases of high population density.
- Encouraging natural predators such as parasitic wasps and other entomophages that target the larvae and pupae.
