Description
Taxonomic position: Flea beetles belonging to the genus Psylliodes are part of the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. These small, jumping beetles are widely recognized as significant agricultural pests that can cause substantial damage to various horticultural and field crops.
Host plants: The primary hosts for Psylliodes are plants within the Brassicaceae family. This includes essential commercial crops such as oilseed rape (canola), cabbage, mustard, radish, broccoli, and turnips. They are particularly devastating to young seedlings, where the impact on plant stand density can be severe.
Biology and life cycle: Adult beetles overwinter in sheltered locations, such as plant debris, hedgerows, or the upper layer of the soil. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge and begin feeding on succulent plant tissues. After mating, females lay eggs, and the resulting larvae develop, often feeding on roots or mining within stems, before pupating in the soil.
Nature of damage: Adults create characteristic "shot-hole" patterns by feeding on the leaf surface, which reduces photosynthetic capacity and can cause wilting in young plants. Larval feeding on roots and stems can inhibit nutrient uptake and water transport, leading to stunted growth, reduced vigor, and in extreme cases, the total loss of the crop stand.
