Cabbage stem flea beetle

Psylliodes chrysocephala

Description

The cabbage stem flea beetle (Psylliodes chrysocephala) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This beetle is a specialized herbivore that poses a substantial threat to brassica crops throughout their lifecycle.

This pest primarily infests members of the Brassicaceae family. Its most notable economic impact is observed in winter oilseed rape, although it also frequently affects crops like mustard, swede, and cabbage. Early-season infestations are particularly damaging as they target the plant at its most vulnerable growth stage.

The biological development of this species is synchronized with the growing season of host plants. Adults typically emerge in late summer and migrate to newly sown fields. After mating, females lay eggs in the soil, and upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the leaf petioles and move downwards into the main stem of the plant to feed.

The harm caused by the larvae is twofold: they cause direct mechanical damage to the internal tissues, which hinders nutrient transport, and they create entry points for soil-borne pathogens. This often results in stunted growth, increased susceptibility to frost damage, and in severe cases, the complete collapse of the plant stem.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as sowing at optimal times, ensuring a healthy crop vigor, and managing weed hosts in the surrounding areas are essential. Chemical control is often necessary, utilizing seed treatments and targeted insecticide applications based on field scouting and economic threshold monitoring.

  • Utilizing seed dressings for early-stage protection.
  • Monitoring adult beetle activity with yellow sticky traps.
  • Encouraging rapid crop establishment through balanced fertilization.
  • Applying insecticides only when infestation thresholds are exceeded.
