Description

Systematic position. The pale-legged flea beetle Psylliodes luteola belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This beetle is a specialized herbivore that significantly impacts agricultural productivity in various temperate climates, particularly affecting members of the Brassicaceae family.

Crops affected. The pest has a strong host preference for cruciferous crops. It poses a significant threat to oilseed rape, mustard, radish, various cabbage species, and turnip. Wild cruciferous weeds can also act as reservoirs for the pest, maintaining populations even when commercial crops are not present.

Biology and lifecycle. The insect overwinters as an adult in soil debris or under organic cover. When spring temperatures rise, the beetles emerge to feed on young host plants. Females lay eggs in the soil near the root zone. Larvae subsequently emerge and feed on the roots and underground stems, eventually pupating in the soil before the next adult generation emerges.

Damage and economic impact. Adult beetles cause characteristic shothole damage to leaves, which can result in severe desiccation of young seedlings. In the early vegetative stages, heavy infestation can kill the apical meristem, leading to crop failure. Root damage by larvae reduces nutrient uptake, causing stunted growth and reducing overall harvest yield.

  • Destroying cruciferous weeds that harbor populations during the off-season.
  • Using insecticidal seed treatments to provide early-season protection.
