Description
Systematic position: The rape flea beetle (Psylliodes napi) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Chrysomelidae family. It is a well-known agricultural pest, causing significant damage to various crops within the Brassicaceae family by feeding on foliage and root systems during the early growth stages.
Host crops: This pest primarily affects cruciferous crops, including winter and spring oilseed rape, mustard, radish, and various types of cabbage. The vulnerability of these plants is highest during the cotyledon and first true leaf stages, as heavy infestations can lead to complete stand loss.
Biology and life cycle: Adult beetles hibernate in soil debris or field margins during the winter. They emerge in early spring when temperatures rise, feeding initially on cruciferous weeds before migrating to emerging crops. Females lay eggs in the soil near the root zone. Larvae hatch and feed on the roots, which can be just as detrimental to plant health as the damage caused by adults to the leaves.
Damage patterns: Adult beetles cause characteristic "shot-hole" damage on leaves by chewing small, circular pits in the epidermis. In severe cases, the entire leaf surface may be skeletonized, resulting in stunted growth or death of the seedling. Root feeding by larvae inhibits water and nutrient uptake, making the plants more susceptible to environmental stress and secondary infections.
