Hop flea beetle

Systematic position: The hop flea beetle Psylliodes punctifrons is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This species is a specialized pest primarily associated with hops, capable of causing significant economic losses in commercial hop yards by damaging leaf tissue and affecting overall plant vigor.

Crops and damage patterns: The primary host plant is the common hop (Humulus lupulus). Adult beetles feed on leaves, creating numerous small, circular holes known as shotholes. When infestations are high, the leaves can become heavily perforated or skeletonized, which drastically reduces the photosynthetic capability of the plant during the critical growth phase.

Biology and life cycle: The beetle overwinter as adults in protected areas such as leaf litter, hedgerows, or the top layer of soil. In spring, they emerge to feed on young hop shoots. The life cycle consists of egg, larval, and pupal stages, with larvae often developing in the soil and feeding on rootlets, while adults focus their damage on the aerial parts of the plant.

Economic significance: The impact is most severe during the early growing season. Heavy feeding pressure on developing shoots can stunt growth and weaken the plant, making it less productive. Furthermore, the extensive leaf damage provides entry points for various secondary infections, which can lead to further decline in crop yield and cone quality.

Control measures: Effective management of the hop flea beetle relies on a combination of cultural and chemical strategies:
