Dark flea beetle

Systematic position: The dark flea beetle (Psylliodes tenebrosa) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This species is known as a specialist feeder, often causing significant economic loss in areas where cruciferous crops are grown throughout the spring and summer months.

Host plants: The pest primarily targets plants within the Brassicaceae family. This includes a wide range of important agricultural crops such as cabbage, radish, mustard, and oilseed rape. Cruciferous weeds also serve as critical alternative hosts, allowing the beetle population to survive between crop cycles.

Biology and development: The life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The insect overwinters as an adult in sheltered sites such as soil debris or leaf litter. As temperatures rise in spring, the adults emerge to feed on host foliage. After mating, females lay eggs, and the larvae eventually pupate in the soil before emerging as the next generation of adults.

Damage and severity: Adult beetles cause damage by chewing small, characteristic holes in the leaves, often referred to as a "shot-hole" pattern. This defoliation is particularly devastating to seedlings, as it can cause rapid transpiration loss and plant stunting. High infestation levels can lead to the total destruction of young crops, resulting in poor stand establishment.

Control measures: Management strategies combine cultural practices and chemical intervention. Crop rotation is essential to break the life cycle, and the removal of cruciferous weeds reduces habitat. Maintaining high soil moisture levels can discourage flea beetle activity. When economic thresholds are met, the application of targeted insecticides is recommended to protect plant health.
