Systematic position: Pteroma plagiophleps belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Psychidae, commonly known as bagworm moths. This species is a specialized pest whose larvae lead a concealed lifestyle, spending their entire developmental period inside a protective case constructed from silk and plant debris.

Host plants: This pest is known for its polyphagous nature, primarily affecting woody trees and shrubs. Its host list includes various fruit trees, tea plants, and certain forestry species, where the insect can multiply rapidly under favorable environmental conditions.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle includes the egg, larva, pupa, and imago stages. Upon hatching, the larva immediately begins constructing a portable protective case. This case is enlarged as the larva grows and feeds. The insect remains inside this structure throughout its larval and pupal development. Females are often wingless and remain within the case throughout their adult life, which makes them difficult to monitor.

Damage character: The larvae skeletonize or completely consume leaf blades, leaving only the primary veins. Severe infestations lead to significant defoliation, which causes physiological stress to the plants, reduced vigor, and stunted growth of shoots. The presence of characteristic dangling cases on branches is the primary indicator of an infestation.

Control measures: Effective management requires a combination of monitoring and intervention strategies. Regular scouting is essential to identify hotspots early. In cases of high population density, systemic or contact insecticides are effective. Additionally, biological control agents, such as formulations based on Bacillus thuringiensis, can be used to target young larvae effectively while minimizing harm to beneficial insects.
