Willow sawfly

Pteronidea ferruginea is a species of insect belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae, commonly known as the common sawfly family. This specific pest primarily targets willow species (Salix), acting as a significant defoliator that can weaken tree health in both forest environments and landscaped gardens.

The biology of this species is characterized by a complex life cycle involving egg-laying within leaf tissues, followed by a larval stage that looks like a caterpillar. These larvae feed voraciously on the foliage of the host tree. Once the larval development is complete, they usually descend to the soil to form cocoons, where they pupate and eventually emerge as adult sawflies to restart the reproductive cycle.

The damage caused by Pteronidea ferruginea is primarily inflicted by the larvae. They use their chewing mouthparts to consume large sections of the leaf blade, often leaving only the veins behind. Significant infestations lead to severe defoliation, which severely hampers the tree's photosynthetic ability, restricts branch growth, and weakens the tree's overall resistance to winter stress and subsequent secondary infections.

Monitoring for this pest should focus on the early spring and summer periods when larvae are actively feeding. Key diagnostic signs include the skeletonization of leaves and the visible presence of the larvae, which are often gregarious. Detection at the first appearance of the larvae is critical, as they can consume a high percentage of leaf biomass in a very short time if left unmanaged.

Management strategies rely on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Cultural control involves clearing leaf litter and soil debris under the trees where pupae overwinter. Chemical control is often necessary during outbreak years, utilizing broad-spectrum or systemic insecticides. Application should be timed carefully to coincide with the larval stage before significant damage is done to the canopy.
