Systematic position: The Robinia sawfly (Pteronidea tibialis) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae. It is a specialized insect pest that significantly impacts specific woody plant species through its leaf-feeding larval stage.

Host plants: The primary host of this sawfly is the black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia). It poses a significant threat to forest plantations, urban landscaping, and shelterbelts where black locust trees are dominant, often leading to widespread defoliation.

Biology and life cycle: Adult sawflies are small, wasp-like insects that emerge in late spring. Females lay eggs inside the leaf tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae, which resemble caterpillars, feed gregariously on the foliage. Depending on the local climate, the species can complete multiple generations within a single growing season.

Damage and pest status: The larvae are highly efficient defoliators. Initially, they cause minor leaf mining or skeletonization. However, as they mature, they consume the entire leaf lamina, leaving only the primary veins.
